Hastings Courts New Manufacturing Investment After Years of Steady Effort
A south-central Nebraska city's long-running economic development push is beginning to show results.
Hastings has spent much of the past decade positioning itself as an affordable alternative to larger Nebraska manufacturing hubs, and city officials say that long-running effort is beginning to pay off, with two mid-sized manufacturers announcing expansion plans in the city this year.
Local economic development officials point to available industrial land, a stable regional workforce, and shorter permitting timelines than larger cities as the pitch that has resonated most with prospective employers. Neither of this year's announced expansions required unusually large incentive packages, officials say, a sign the city's underlying value proposition is drawing interest on its own.
The expansions are expected to add several hundred jobs combined over the next few years, a meaningful addition for a city of Hastings' size, though officials acknowledge that filling those positions will require continued investment in workforce training given regional labor market constraints similar to those facing other Central Nebraska communities.
City leaders describe the wins as validation of a patient, incremental economic development strategy, rather than reliance on any single transformative project, a contrast to how some larger Nebraska cities have pursued growth in recent years.
