Nebraska Massage Therapy Licensing Standards Face Renewed Attention

State regulators overseeing massage therapy licensing are reviewing continuing education requirements for the profession, part of a broader effort to keep pace with growing demand for wellness services across Nebraska's cities and larger towns.

The review follows years of steady growth in the number of licensed massage therapists statewide, driven in part by increased interest in wellness services among consumers and a growing body of research supporting massage therapy's role in pain management and stress reduction. Industry groups have generally welcomed the review, arguing that updated continuing education standards would help maintain consistent quality as the profession grows.

Some smaller, independent practitioners have raised concerns that more demanding continuing education requirements could disproportionately burden solo practitioners in rural areas, who often have less flexibility to travel for required training compared to therapists working within larger clinics or spas in bigger cities.

State officials say any updated requirements would likely include a phase-in period and expanded access to online continuing education options, intended to address exactly this concern about rural practitioner access.
