What Local Beauty Businesses Get Right About Trust

The best local salons and spas understand something that larger consumer industries keep relearning the hard way.

What Local Beauty Businesses Get Right About Trust

After a year spent reporting on Nebraska's beauty and wellness businesses, I keep coming back to the same observation: the salons and spas that succeed long-term are not necessarily the ones with the most impressive equipment or the trendiest treatment menu. They are the ones that have figured out how to be honest with customers in small, consistent ways.

That sounds obvious, maybe even a little trite. But it is worth saying plainly, because it runs against the instinct a lot of service businesses have to oversell — to promise more dramatic results than a treatment can realistically deliver, or to add on services during an appointment that a customer did not clearly agree to in advance. I have heard enough versions of this complaint from readers across the state to know it is not an isolated problem.

The businesses that have built genuine customer loyalty, by contrast, tend to do less selling and more explaining. They tell you honestly whether a treatment is likely to help with what you are asking about. They quote a price and stick to it. They do not treat a first-time customer's hesitation as an objection to overcome rather than a legitimate question to answer.

None of this requires sophisticated marketing or a large advertising budget. It requires treating trust as the actual product being sold, which, in an industry built on ongoing personal relationships between a customer and a stylist, esthetician, or therapist, it always has been. The businesses that understand this are the ones still around in five years. The ones that do not, usually are not.
