Omaha's Old Market Arts District Finds a Second Wind

Omaha's Old Market, a historic warehouse district that has anchored the city's arts scene for decades, is experiencing what several gallery owners describe as a genuine second wind, driven by a new generation of independent galleries and performance venues opening alongside the district's longer-established institutions.

The newer additions lean toward smaller, artist-run spaces rather than large commercial galleries, a shift that several longtime Old Market business owners say has brought a rawer, more experimental energy to the district's exhibition calendar than it has had in years.

Live music and performance venues have followed a similar pattern, with several small stages hosting regular showcases for local musicians and touring acts that might once have bypassed Omaha entirely in favor of larger regional markets.

District business associations describe the growth as organic rather than centrally planned, crediting relatively affordable commercial rents compared to newer developments elsewhere downtown as a key factor allowing younger, independent operators to take a chance on opening in the historic district.
