Nebraska Small Businesses Navigate Rising Operating Costs

Small business owners across Nebraska describe a familiar but intensifying challenge heading into the back half of the year: operating costs that continue to climb faster than they can comfortably pass along to customers.

Commercial insurance premiums have risen sharply for several categories of small business over the past two years, owners say, driven by broader national trends in claims costs rather than anything specific to their individual operations. Combined with steady increases in commercial rent in growing areas like west Omaha and south Lincoln, the pressure on margins has been persistent.

Restaurant and retail owners in particular describe a delicate balancing act between raising prices enough to protect margins and risking customer pushback in a market where consumers have grown more price-sensitive. Several owners in smaller towns say they have less pricing flexibility than their urban counterparts, given lower average incomes in their customer base.

Local chambers of commerce say they are fielding more requests than usual for guidance on cost management and financing options, a sign that even businesses with steady revenue are looking for ways to build more of a cushion against continued cost pressure.
