Lake McConaughy Prepares for Its Busiest Summer Season Yet
Nebraska's largest reservoir continues to draw boaters and beachgoers from across the region each summer.
Lake McConaughy, Nebraska's largest reservoir, is bracing for another busy summer season, with local outfitters reporting strong early bookings for boat rentals and lakeside camping sites that have become increasingly popular with visitors from across the region.
The lake's wide, sandy beaches — a genuine surprise to first-time visitors expecting a typical Midwestern reservoir shoreline — remain its signature draw, alongside strong walleye and white bass fishing that attracts anglers from neighboring states as well as locals.
Water levels this season are reported near normal for this point in the summer, a relief to local business owners after several recent years of lower reservoir levels limited boat ramp access and shrank the swimmable beach areas near peak season.
Local officials continue to balance the lake's growing popularity with capacity concerns at some of the more popular access points, and visitors planning a summer weekend trip are encouraged to book campsites well in advance, particularly around major holidays.
